In a recent article, Public News Service reported that former White House cyber-security expert Jake Braun warns of escalating cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure, particularly water and energy utilities. During his time at the Biden administration, Braun noted deliberate attempts by nation-states like China to infiltrate civilian utilities supporting military installations. Highlighting the vulnerability of the nation’s 50,000 water utilities—most of which lack federal protection—Braun is collaborating with the National Rural Water Association to recruit cyber-volunteers through Project Franklin. This initiative aims to provide free cybersecurity support to underserved rural utilities. Braun emphasized the need for increased awareness and utilization of funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to bolster water infrastructure security.
